POLK COUNTY, Fla (WFLA) — The Polk County Commission will vote on ordinances that would hopefully deter behaviors like the lakeside brawl from early August, where two people were knocked unconscious and several were arrested.

Residents said they are in fear of retaliation from the people causing these disturbances in their backyards, and they need the commission to push this through for their safety.

“It’s been pretty wild. It’s gotten wilder and wilder every year,” said Scott Miller, who lives on Lake Winterset.

He said people have parked right behind his boat ramp, playing loud music. Others told deputies they witnessed people defecating in their bushes, and then there was the backyard brawl that led to the arrest of eight people. The fight seemed to be the last straw for county leaders, who gave several warnings about trespassing in the area.

“You have unleashed the teeth of the dog and now we’re going to start biting you just like we bite these guys here,” said Sheriff Grady Judd during a press conference in August.

Judd said his department asked the county to designate swim zones and enhance the noise ordinance on the lake. Tuesday, the county will vote on it.

“We are going to ensure that we have safety for our swimmers and families, that we are not gonna have people that make bad choices,” said County Commissoner Becky Troutman during a meeting in August.

The exclusion zones would apply to Lakes Winterset, Ariana, and Clinch. Miller said he thinks the county will find a way to get it done.

“I think it will deter people from parking on the point, and again it’s also safety reasons,” said Miller. “I just want to be able to enjoy my own property.”

The commission meeting starts at 9 a.m.
