A man has been charged in northern Tasmania after police discovered counterfeit cash circulating in the community.

The 22-year-old man from Invermay was charged with multiple offences related to counterfeit money.

A further seven people have also been charged by police for counterfeit money offences in August.

The counterfeit bills appear legitimate at a glance, however, some have the words “PROPS” printed onto them.

Detective Acting Inspector Aziz Melick said it was part of an ongoing investigation into counterfeit notes that have been popping up throughout northern Tasmania.

“Police remind the community that it is an offence to possess, buy, sell and use counterfeit money,” Melick said.

Police are urging Australians to check the legitimacy of their cash and to contact police if they find counterfeit cash.
