Dog walkers are worried about their privacy after a Melbourne council installed a CCTV camera to catch-off leash dogs.

The Port Phillip City Council installed the roving camera at Hewison Reserve in Balaclava two weeks ago to ensure residents comply with restrictions on dogs.

The camera will be moved to other local parks every fortnight.

According to the council, the cameras are motion-activated and only used by animal management officers in a live capacity instead of being recorded and stored.

Signs have been put up to alert residents but experts have raised concerns with transparency.

“It’s one of the crucial cornerstones in this whole process because we know that public trust can be lost very quickly,” Deakin University expert Margarita Vladimirova said.

There are more than 100 parks in the council area.

Council has received 3500 complaints in the last year relating to domestic pets.

Ten of the complaints about dogs being off leash in the park.
