Today With Jenna & Friends looked very different Wednesday (Sept. 3) morning due to Jenna Bush Hager‘s mysterious absence.

Fans tuning into Wednesday’s broadcast may have been surprised to see Savannah Guthrie and Willie Geist walk out to Bush Hager’s cheery theme song. But the co-hosts were eager and ready to get the show on the road as they joked that today’s broadcast will feature “no Jenna, just friends.”

After Geist teased that it felt like Guthrie’s “first day in television” as they acclimated to co-hosting Today With Jenna & Friends together, the co-hosts continued cracking jokes about taking over the fourth hour of Today.

“It’s nice that she let us take care of the show for the day,” Guthrie told Geist. “It’s like housesitting. It’s like, ‘Did you water the plants? Did you feed the cats?’”  

Geist then asked Guthrie if they should “throw a party” in Bush Hager’s absence.

“Yeah we should throw a party! Let’s have a banger,” Guthrie said, before confessing she did throw a party once in high school when her parents were away. “Let me tell you, they were finding beer cans in the gutter off the roof months later. And I was like, ‘It’s spotless, they’ll never know.’”

Why isn’t Jenna Bush Hager on Today?

Guthrie explained Bush Hager’s absence at the top of the show. She teased that the Today host could have a major project coming down the pipeline

“Willie and I are here,” Guthrie explained. “Jenna’s out on assignment. She’s got a really important assignment, you’ll hear more about that later.”

It’s unclear when Bush Hager will be back on the show. However, Guthrie and Geist said they were co-hosting “just for the day,” so it is likely Bush Hager will be back in time for Thursday and Friday’s broadcasts.

Geist will continue co-hosting Jenna & Friends for the rest of the week.
