CHICAGO RIDGE, Ill. (WLS) — A 22-year-old man died in a crash in Chicago Ridge over the Labor Day weekend. Police say they have issued over 150 citations at the same intersection since December 2023.

Chicago Ridge police responded about 10 p.m. Sunday to the intersection of 99th Street and Harlem Avenue. When police arrived, they found two heavily damaged vehicles and several injured individuals.

Surveillance video from a nearby home shows the crash.

Police say a vehicle was traveling north on Harlem when another vehicle tried turning left on 99th Street, and they crashed.

Four people were taken to Christ Hospital for treatment.

The 22-year-old man, who was a passenger in one of the vehicles, died shortly after the crash. The driver of the same vehicle suffered minor injuries, and is expected to recover, police said. A man and woman from the other vehicle are in critical condition Thursday.

There is now a memorial for the man killed at the intersection.

The driver of the northbound vehicle says he lost his 22-year-old best friend in the crash.

“CRPD understands the community’s ongoing concerns regarding safety at the intersection of 99th Street and Harlem Avenue. Our officers are committed to addressing these issues and making Harlem Avenue safer for all drivers,” police said in a news release.

Since December 2023, the Chicago Ridge Police Department has issued 168 traffic citations directly related to violations at the intersection, with the majority involving disobeying traffic signals and improper U-turns, police said.

Nearby residents say these crashes have become far too common, as they point out the dangers that come with a left turn yield traffic signal.

“A lot of people are saying we try to avoid Harlem because of these accidents; we take different routes to go home because of it being so dangerous at this intersection,” resident Yasmine Tolaymat said.

Tolaymat says she has lived in Chicago Ridge her entire life. And, after this latest crash, she started a petition for the village to change the traffic light signal at the intersection.

More than 1,500 people have already signed it since Monday, as many residents said that drivers are often speeding out of an underpass on Harlem, leaving little time to react to a turning vehicle.

“Not a yield a signal, but a no-turn, a signal going left and a no-turn on red, just wait your turn. It’s not that hard to just wait a couple seconds. It saves your life and whoever else’s life that you’re gonna run into,” Tolaymat said.

Residents are hoping to attend a Village Hall meeting next week to express the safety concerns at the intersection, as they say they’re tired of seeing these tragedies.

Village officials said it will be on the agenda at the Tuesday meeting

“It’s really sad, and me personally, I’ve seen three different times of people laying on the ground, covered up. So, I don’t like to see that,” Tolaymat said.

Chicago Ridge police and the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team continue to investigate the Sunday crash. It’s not yet clear if anyone will be charged.
