SARASOTA, Fla. (SSN) — Tucked away in the heart of downtown Sarasota, The Artful Giraffe is more than just a gallery.

It’s a vibrant community space where local art comes to life and creativity is always welcome. Whether you’re an experienced artist or just curious about trying something new, this hidden gem has something for everyone.

“We have over 300 local artists in the gallery, and several of them are instructors here,” owner Timothy Craig said.

As you step inside, you’re immediately surrounded by a diverse collection of works — from handcrafted pottery to coastal-inspired canvases and intricate ceramics. But it’s not just what’s on the walls that draws people in. Out back, in the studio, is where the real magic happens.

Getting Hands-On at the Pottery Wheel

Timothy guided me through one of the studio’s most popular offerings — the pottery wheel class. Before I began, he demonstrated how to transform a lump of clay into a bowl. I watched intently as the spinning wheel brought the form to life.

“Being on the wheel,” he explained, “you don’t think of anything else but the wheel in front of you.”

That calming focus became clear the moment I sat down to try it myself. Following Tim’s instructions, I slowly began shaping my own bowl.

Tim laughed and said for someone who works in TV, I sure got quiet.

He was absolutely right — it felt like stepping into a different world, one where everything slows down and creativity takes over.

After completing my bowl, I went on to craft a plate using the same technique. Once both pieces were finished, they were set aside to dry before painting.

A Space for Everyone

Whether you’re looking to unwind, try something new, or simply enjoy the arts, The Artful Giraffe has something for you.

If the pottery wheel feels a bit daunting, don’t worry. The studio also offers pre-made ceramics that you can paint at your own pace.

“It’s great for all ages,” Timothy said. “From the ages two to 102, we have something for everyone.
