VERNON HILLS, Ill. (WLS) — Brides-to-be were left scrambling, after a popular wedding venue canceled their dates unexpectedly.

A Chicago woman says she got the news this week that she no longer has a venue for her big day.

The iconic venue is featured in the classic 90s romcom “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”

Marianna Papageorgiu and her fiancé, Jake, were excited to say “I do” at Cuneo Mansion and Gardens in Vernon Hills.

“When I got that call, I mean my heart dropped,” Papageorgiu said.

The couple learned the venue, which is owned by Loyola University Chicago, is transferring ownership to an undisclosed party. And, as a result, they are canceling their wedding date and terminating their contract.

“I just fell apart because I’m nine months away from my wedding. I fully have envisioned my day there,” Papageorgiu said. “I’ve pictured walking down the aisle there. I’ve pictured where my photos would be taken.”

In an email, Loyola says “your venue rental deposit of $1,000 will be refunded to the credit card used for the original payment within 30 days of this notice.”

But Papageorgiu says they’ve already put down $3,000.

And that’s on top of the $6,000 she says they paid for their caterer.

“There’s deposits we’ve paid for other vendors that we have to work with now to see if they will honor returning those deposits, if we’re not able to transfer them over to other venues that we find,” Papageorgiu said.

Papageorgiu shared her story on TikTok, and others reached out, saying they were impacted, too.

“As a Loyola alum, I expected way more from the institution,” Papageorgiu said.

In the email, Loyola says they are in accordance with section 11 of the agreement, which states Loyola will provide the wedding party at least six months of advance notice of terminating the contract in the event the venue is sold.

Papageorgiu’s wedding is scheduled for June of next year, but she says all of the venues she’s called so far are booked solid.

“It’s a big punch to the gut. Wedding planning is not easy; it’s a long process. And it’s also a very financially burdensome process that couples choose to undertake because they want to make this day special,” Papageorgiu said.

Neither the venue nor Loyola responded to requests for comment.
