CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A Champaign County aviation club is bringing together remote-control pilots from across the Midwest this weekend.

It’s part of the Barnstormers over Champaign’s annual fun fly, taking place Saturday and Sunday. These RC planes can soar at speeds up to 200 miles-per-hour.

Club member Dan Irwin said it’s all about bringing people with a love for flying together and passing on that joy to the next generation.

His joy for flying showed during his interview — when a plane started soaring overhead.

“It’s such a love for the airplane — oh wow, a bunch of biplanes flying over! PT 17s. It’s just a love I’ve got for it; another thing is the membership and comradery. We have such a great group of guys on this club,” Irwin said.

Planes will be lifting off Sunday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The club also offers free flying lessons during the week for anyone who is interested.
