TEXARKANA, Texas. (KTAL/KMSS) – Texas A&M University Texarkana (TAMUT) is another step closer to bringing college football to the city.

“It’s going to be awesome for our university as well as our community. Watching this grow from scratch to what we think we’re going to do is going to be awesome,” says Ryan Wall, TAMUT athletic director.

At a press conference on Thursday, they announced that they have found a new home in Division II as a member of the Lone Star Conference as part of their transition up from the NAIA Division, just in time for the football team’s inaugural season in 2027.

“There’s a probation period, and we’re trying to do the expedited route, which is 2 years, and then after that’s up, we’ll be a full-fledged Division II program in the Lone Star Conference, everywhere from Laredo to Eastern New Mexico to Texarkana,” says Wall.

They also revealed a partnership with Red River Credit Union for the naming rights for the future Eagles’ football stadium. The stadium is in early planning stages, with a planned capacity of 6,000, aiming to be ready for the new team by 2028.

“It will allow us to actively engage the community, recruit talented students and student athletes, and just be a showcase for the greater Texarkana region,” says TAMUT President Ross Alexander.

Also playing games at the stadium will be a women’s flag football team.

“We’re starting a lot of different sports. So the buzz around here, along with everything else, is on a high level,” says Wall.

The university will also be partnering with Red River Credit Union on an upcoming center for financial literacy.
