The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has arrested David Binz, featured in a viral vigilante video.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has arrested the suspect at the center of a viral video posted by an online vigilante group, the agency announced Monday. The video has been viewed more than a quarter of a million times on social media in less than 24 hours.

The suspect in the video is David Binz, a registered sex offender. According to the Florida Sex Offender Registry, he was previously convicted in three cases: using the internet to solicit or attempt to solicit a child for sex in 2006, unlawful sexual activity with a minor 16 or 17 years old in 2011, and possession of a photo showing the sexual performance of a child in 2009. All three crimes occurred in different counties.

In the video, the group claims the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was allowing a suspect to walk free after child pornography was allegedly found on his phone.

Late Monday, JSO posted a response, calling vigilante investigations “dangerous.” The agency said such investigations can compromise evidence and put victims or bystanders at risk. JSO also said incorrect information was shared on social media, including claims that officers did not seize the suspect’s phone. Investigators confirmed the phone in question was taken.

JSO said Binz had been arrested less than three hours before the release, which was posted around 9:30 p.m.

Binz is facing eight felony charges related to violating sex offender requirements. JSO said investigators will determine if additional charges are warranted. He is currently being held without bond.
