LUBBOCK, Texas — Two deputies from the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office suffered serious injuries and another person had moderate injuries after a crash on I-27 at 98th Street on Monday morning.

The call came in just before 9:45 a.m. According to an LBKAlert, 98th Street and I-27 (Highway 87) was closed for southbound traffic. All lanes at 98th Street were closed at the highway. All drivers had to detour at the 82nd Street exit.

LCSO said the deputies Cavasos and Martinez were helping a stranded motorist. Speaking with the family they were helping, EverythingLubbock learned they had a flat tire and the deputies stepped in to help after spotting them trying to change it. They finished the job, when a semi-truck crashed into their patrol vehicle.

A photo from the scene showed a deputy dangling from the 98th Street overpass as first responders and witnesses helped. LCSO said the Lubbock Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety and Lubbock Fire Rescue immediately responded.

The Lubbock Police Department said families of the deputies were contacted and the Major Crash Investigation Unit responded to the scene.

“We ask the Lubbock community to please keep the deputies and their families in their prayers,” LCSO said.

This morning, two Lubbock County Sheriff’s deputies were seriously injured in a crash on I-27. We are praying for their full recovery and for comfort and strength for their families during this difficult time. I am grateful for the swift response of our first responders and the excellent care provided by the medical teams at UMC. Please continue to keep these deputies, their families, and the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office in your prayers.
