JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WJHL) — A woman in Jonesborough was charged with child endangerment after driving under the influence shortly after midnight on Wednesday, according to authorities.

A release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said April Garland, 39, was charged with child endangerment, possession of a handgun while under the influence, driving under the influence and violating the open container law.

The release said that deputies responded to the 100 block of New Salem Road after a witness reported that a young child approached their residence to ask for directions before returning to the vehicle. The witness reportedly told Gardner to park the car before she drove to the end of the cul-de-sac and parked. The witness then called 911, according to the release.

According to the release, deputies found the child and found Garland lying in the front seat of the vehicle. She reportedly told deputies she had been drinking. As she exited the vehicle, the deputies could see a handgun in the driver’s side door compartment, the release said. Deputies also found two open containers of beer.

A family member reportedly picked the child up.

Deputies transported Garland to the Washington County Detention Center. She is being held without bond and will appear in court on Thursday.
