TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Amid a Florida Attorney General’s Office investigation, more homeowners are stepping forward, worried about losing their homes in foreclosure lawsuits with their roofer.

One of them is T.J. Freidinger. He said Florida Roof Specialists assured him they would deal directly with his insurance company, and customers only pay their deductibles.

He had quotes from other companies for around $24,000, which is what his insurance company ended up paying FRS.

The roof went up in a day and looks great, but it was followed by a shocker of a bill: $26,469, including “supplemental charges.”

“So my initial thing was, okay, you’ve got an accounting error like this should be a negative, not a positive,” Freidinger said. “But I had no from this point on I had no more Communication from them email wise, calls nothing.”

8 On Your Side Consumer Investigator Shannon Behnken took a look at the supplement, outlining charges like permitting, a dumpster, removing shingles, flashing, and a drip edge — all things Freidinger said he thought was included in the $24,000 paid by insurance.

FRS contracts reviewed by Better Call Behnken do warn that the homeowners could be responsible for things not covered by insurance, “such as rotten wood.”

“Not $26 grand and you can’t explain to me why,” Freidinger pointed out. “They can’t explain to me why. They have no interest in explaining to me why.”

Freidinger said at first, FRS representatives assured him insurance would pay, even after they filed a lien against his home.

But Freidinger said Citizens Insurance closed the claim, saying they paid a fair price. Then, earlier this year, FRS filed a foreclosure lawsuit against Freidinger in Pinellas County Court.

He isn’t alone.

The Florida Attorney General’s Office confirms it has 131 complaints and an active consumer protection investigation into the company.

No one from Florida Roof Specialists or its attorney, Daniel M. Copeland, have returned calls for comment on the complaints or the AG investigation.
