A 22-year-old man in Michigan is accused of shooting the man his ex-girlfriend called for help after she spotted him following her home from the movies.

Dominic Michael McBride was taken into custody over the weekend and charged with one count each of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, and assault with a dangerous weapon, authorities announced.

According to a news release from the Sumpter Township Police Department, at about 11 p.m. on Sunday, officers responded to a home in the 46000 block of Reed Street regarding a reported shooting. The residence is about 30 miles southwest of Detroit.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders said they located a 40-year-old man who appeared to have suffered two gunshot wounds, one to the left side of his upper chest and another that grazed his right cheek. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment by Huron Valley Ambulance personnel. Police have not released the name of the victim, but he was identified as the resident of the Reed Street home.

Investigators said the incident began earlier that evening at the Emagine Theater in the 39000 block of Ford Road in Canton Township, Michigan. The theater is just under 20 miles from the site of the shooting.

There, McBride allegedly spotted and made contact with his ex-girlfriend, who was at the theater with another man, neither of whom were identified in the release. McBride reportedly then began following his ex-girlfriend and the other man as they drove away from the theater.

“The suspect followed the two approximately 18 miles to the residence on Reed Street, at which point the victim, whom the couple had called to notify him of what was occurring, exited the residence, telling the suspect to leave,” the release states. “After a brief encounter, the suspect allegedly produced a handgun while seated in his vehicle and shot the victim, who was standing in his yard.”

Following the shooting, police said McBride drove to a nearby area and waited for the police to arrive. He was subsequently taken into custody. Police said the handgun believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered.

McBride appeared in court for his arraignment before Judge Teresa Arlaina Patton, who set his bond at $500,000. He is scheduled to appear in court again for a probable cause hearing on Sept. 24, court records show.
