(WJW) – Rescue crews saved a snowboarder who officials said fell about 100 feet from a glacier in Colorado on Monday.

According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a call about someone seriously hurt near the Skyscraper Glacier in Boulder County.

Investigators learned that the snowboarder, a 27-year-old man, was getting ready to descend the glacier when he fell, “sliding and tumbling approximately 100 feet down the snowfield before coming to rest in a bergschrund,” the sheriff’s office said.

Volunteers with the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group were flown to a mountain ridge above the snowfield, while search and rescue teams, sheriff’s deputies and EMS crews also responded to the area.

The volunteers trekked a 300-foot path of glacier snow to reach the victim, who was treated for his injuries around 5:45 p.m., investigators said.

After being moved to a safer location, crews established an uphaul system to lift the snowboarder about 50 feet to the top of the glacier, where he received further medical attention, the sheriff’s office said.

The victim was taken to nearby hospital just after 8 p.m.

According to AllTrails, Skyscraper Peak from Rollins Pass is “a highly challenging route” that “should only be attempted by experienced adventurers.”
