Elderly woman arrested, charged with murder in Hilton Head Island shooting

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. () — An 82-year-old woman was arrested and charged in connection to a shooting death on Hilton Head Island Friday.

At around 10:30 a.m. Friday morning, officials responded to reports of shots fired at the Preston Health Center at the Cypress of Hilton Head.

Deputies arrived and found Harriett Kay Recker, 82, of Sun City, alongside her spouse, an 81-year-old man who had an apparent gunshot wound.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the 81-year-old man succumbed to his injuries.

Recker is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. She is currently being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center.

Officials said the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office will release additional information about the 81-year-old man pending notification of next of kin.
