ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – The Ormond Beach community came together Friday night to mourn the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, drawing a couple hundred people carrying American flags and homemade signs.

The event, organized by local residents, was described as both emotional and healing for those who attended.

“I was really not expecting this much traction, but I am so proud of our community and proud of everybody that came together for this,” the organizer said.

Many in attendance described Kirk as a husband, father and Christian who had a lasting impact on their lives, even if they didn’t always agree with his views.

“I’ve been watching Charlie Kirk since 2020,” one attendee said. “He was a good man, a good father, a good husband, a good Christian.”

Local leaders, including Ormond Beach’s mayor, said the crowd reflected the community’s need to grieve together.

“I’m really surprised and happy at the same time that we have a great showing here so far,” the mayor said. “When things like this happen, we want to be able to mourn the loss and come together as a community.”

Several attendees noted the challenges of processing graphic images circulating online following Kirk’s death.

“It’s been very challenging,” one mourner said. “I’ve been upset, scared the last few days. It’s a dark, dark place right now, and it shouldn’t be that way.”

Others said the gathering represented not only grief but also a sense of unity.

“I think it’s patriotic,” one resident said. “What happened a couple of days ago is very tragic, and this is just a great outpouring of the community and the spirit of this country.”

Community members said they hoped the vigil reminded people of the importance of free expression and belonging.

“Charlie Kirk stood for truth,” one attendee said. “We believe in the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
