A day care employee in South Carolina was arrested for a “disturbing” attack on a child at a Christian preschool, authorities said.

Gladys Rampersant, 75, was arrested on Thursday and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, the North Charleston Police Department announced. The alleged attack occurred in July.

“Detectives with the North Charleston Police Department”s Special Victims Unit have arrested a daycare employee in connection with a case of alleged child abuse, regarding an assault on a child,” the law enforcement agency said.

Rampersant was working at Sweetgrass Christian Academy on Remount Road in North Charleston at the time of the incident. She was reportedly caring for a baby — less than one year old — and allegedly yanked the infant up by the arms and shook them hard before “slamming” the child into a crib.

The suspect went back to the baby, pulling them out of their crib and hitting them on the head several times, local CBS affiliate WCSC reported.

Rampersant was jailed in the Al Cannon Detention Center — reportedly on a $15,000 bond — but she posted bond several hours after her arrest. Court records show her next appearance in court is set for Oct. 31.

Several social media pages for Sweetgrass Christian Academy have been deactivated, and a Google search for the daycare says it is “permanently closed.” According to its website, its grand opening was on July 26.

Charleston is located just southeast of North Charleston, with the former located on the coast in the southeast of the state.
