ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando police on Saturday evening said they are investigating an incident near the Pulse nightclub after a man said he was punched and kicked in the face.

Police said they were aware of the “incident that occurred in the 1900 block of S. Orange Avenue,” but did not provide further details.

During Saturday’s incident, 39-year-old Zane Aparicio spoke to News 6 about what happened.

Aparicio said he was attacked by a person who has been driving by Pulse since Wednesday. He he said the person has been shouting slurs and showing obscene hand gestures.

According to Aparicio, the unidentified person removed a trans and rainbow flag and threw them into oncoming traffic. When he went to retrieve them, Aparicio said he was attacked.

“I got punched and kicked in the face. Of course it hurt,” he said. “He grabbed the rainbow flag that I had in my hands from my hands, and then started punching me and kicking me. I went down. I did not attack back. And, as I tried to get up, he kicked me in the face. I pick myself up. I called the cops.”

In a video provided to News 6 that only shows a small portion of the incident, a person can be seen kicking Aparicio in the head before they get into a vehicle and drive away.

The crosswalk outside Pulse, at South Orange Avenue and West Esther Street, has become a point of contention between state leaders and Orlando residents, who have sat in defiance outside Pulse ever since FDOT employees first removed the rainbow colors from the crosswalk last month.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
