CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illini will head into Big Ten play with a 3-0 record after a shutout win over Western Michigan.

No. 9 Illinois welcomed the Broncos to town in front of a sold-out crowd at Gies Memorial Stadium, the first game since Gies’s historic donation.

Illinois got off to a slow start, the first drive ending in a David Olano field goal. Early in the second quarter, Luke Altmyer found Hank Beatty in the endzone for a short touchdown to go up 10-0 at halftime.

Kaden Feagin found the endzone early in the third with a three-yard rush and would go on to log a 100-yard+ game for the second time in his career. With his first rushing touchdown of the season, Luke Altmyer gave Illinois a 24-0 lead to start the fourth quarter.

The Illini would only build steam in the fourth frame, with Ashton Hollins scoring his first touchdown of the season with a six-yard reception and Ca’Lil Valentine putting it away with five minutes remaining.

With a 3-0 record, Illinois will head to Bloomington to open conference play against No. 22 Indiana on Saturday, Sept. 20 under the lights. The Hoosiers shut out Indiana State in Week 3.
