Trump asks Congress for $58 million in security funding

() Due to increased threats against public officials, the Trump administration has requested Congress to spend an additional $58 million for the U.S. Marshals Service to expand security for the executive branch and Supreme Court justices, according to an administration source.

The administration also supports increased funding for security for members of Congress, leaving it to lawmakers on how to allocate resources.

Congress and the White House must keep the government funded before Sept 30, when the current money allocation runs out.

This comes as conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated in what could be an act of political violence, though authorities have not publicly identified a motive.

Data shows political violence is on the rise. Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in their home in July after a man stalked the elected official. He also targeted state Sen. John Hoffman and attempted to shoot his daughter, police say. The most notable recent assassination attempt was on then-candidate Donald Trump during a campaign rally last July.
