A Georgia police officer is recovering after a suspect shot him in the face during a suspicious vehicle call, according to officials.

Police arrested 26-year-old Timothy Craig Ramsey for allegedly shooting McCaysville police Capt. Brantley Worley on Friday night. Chief Michael Earley told reporters that officers were responding to a suspicious person call along First Street shortly after 11 p.m. When officers arrived on scene, Ramsey allegedly opened fire and “brutally shot my officer in the face,” Earley said in an interview with Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB.

The shooting set off a massive manhunt with local, state and federal authorities searching for Ramsey. Police initially tried to arrest the suspect at his home early Saturday morning but he wasn”t there. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Saturday issued a “Blue Alert” which requested the public’s help in searching for Ramsey. Cops received a tip about the suspect’s whereabouts and he was arrested around 6 p.m. Saturday.

Ramsey stands accused of aggravated assault with intent to murder a police officer. Neighbors told Atlanta News First that Ramsey was known to be “aggressive and violent” and once shot out someone’s windows because he believed the person killed his cat.

Worley, who was promoted to captain in July, has spent three years with McCaysville police and has about 15 years of law enforcement experience. The bullet broke his neck and caused his brain to bleed, per Earley.

“Captain Worley is a dedicated officer who has faithfully served this community, and we are asking everyone to keep him, his family, and our department in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time,” he said in a statement.

McCaysville is a small town located in northern Georgia on the border with Tennessee.
