ORLANDO, Fla. – Dozens of artists are transforming the parking lot of a well-known Orlando business in response to Florida’s recent decision to paint over street art on public roadways, including the rainbow crosswalk outside the Pulse nightclub.

On Monday, Trina Gregory, owner of Se7en Bites restaurant, will open 49 of her private parking spaces for local artists to transform into vibrant works of art.

The goal of the event is to turn the controversy into a powerful community-driven celebration.

“I wanted our community to feel a sense of that things weren’t being taken away,” Gregory said. “Art just seems to be such a really important part of what makes the city of Orlando, the city of Orlando.”

The Florida Department of Transportation began painting over street art after new federal and state guidelines that included a prohibition on non-uniform traffic control devices, such as pavement markings on state and local roads.

The crosswalk outside Pulse, at South Orange Avenue and West Esther Street, became a point of contention between state leaders and Orlando residents, who have sat in defiance outside Pulse ever since FDOT employees first removed the rainbow colors from the crosswalk last month.

“With our murals, and our sidewalks, and our electric boxes, and our storm drains, we are a city that loves art,” Gregory said. “This is my way to kind of still offer that space, but in a protected way.”

The family-friendly celebration outside Se7en Bites aims to uplift Orlando’s LGBTQ+ community and showcase local talent while sending a powerful message of resilience.

Gregory said the event will become an annual tradition, giving artists and residents an ongoing opportunity to come together, create, and celebrate diversity.

Parking Spaces for Pride will take place on Monday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. at 617 N Primrose Drive.
