One person is dead and six others are injured, including five police officers, after a gas leak in north-west Sydney.

Emergency services responded to reports of a gas leak at a restaurant on Garfield Road in Riverstone this morning.

One person was confirmed dead at the scene. Five police officers and a member of the public were taken to Blacktown Hospital in a stable condition.

When emergency services arrived, they found people in the building overcome by the gas.

“A number of people have been exposed to some kind of gas,” Superintendent Adam Newberry said.

“I understand a number of people appear to have been affected by carbon monoxide poisoning.

“This is a developing situation or emergency.”
