TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Communities across the country and in Tampa are grappling with the loss of political activist Charlie Kirk. More than 2,000 people were at the University of South Florida Monday night to honor Kirk’s memory with a vigil.

Lines wrapped the building, and the Marshall Student Center auditorium quickly met capacity.

“I am here because Charlie Kirk, during his time, has had such a big impact on my life and the life with so many people here,” said USF Graduate Student Angela.

Angela got a chance to see Kirk while he was on USF’s campus in February.

“When I was at that rally, he was the kindest person who was at the mic, he would always make sure that whoever was around, that there was no booing, that there was no hatred, that no one was laughing at the person that was right there,” she said.

There was a counter protester, and students who said they disagree with political violence and some of Kirk’s opinions.

“I think the situation is unfortunate, but I believe that this is a stark reminder that we have to be careful about what we say,” said Dominic Crowl, a USF student.

8 On Your Side asked a person who attended the vigil what they thought of how some people characterized Kirk.

“I say that he stood firm on his beliefs and what he is known for from the Bible. And I believe he’s given everybody an open chance to have a conversation,” said Jennifer Winchester, a Tampa native and creator of The Playground Pro.

Viewers shared videos and pictures from inside the vigil. USF officials said Turning Point USA would not allow media cameras inside the vigil. Some students were against the university allowing the vigil to happen.

“I find it a little bit odd that we’re hosting an official event for this man, but not for the countless lives that were lost in those wars or in any of the other things going on in the world. I just feel like it’s a little bit selective empathy,” said a student who wanted to remain anonymous.

Others said they just wanted to pay their respects to a man they admire.

“Charlie was such an amazing person. And not only did he stand for political views, his political views were rooted in biblical truth,” said Angela.

The USF College Republicans and Democrats put out a joint statement condemning political violence and encouraging unity across party lines.
