Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) will lead a vigil in memory of conservative activist and commentator Charlie Kirk in the Capitol on Monday evening, open to all members of both parties.

The memorial will take place in Statuary Hall at 6:15 p.m. EDT, just ahead of House votes. Johnson will give remarks and prayers in wake of Kirk’s assassination last week.

Johnson will be joined by House leadership and other members of Congress, according to an advisory.

The vigil comes after Johnson led a silent moment of prayer on the House floor for Kirk in the hours following the shooting last week, which devolved into a shouting match between Republicans and Democrats after Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) requested a prayer to be spoken out loud.

And it also follows a prayer vigil that was held for Kirk at the Kennedy Center on Sunday evening, which included remarks from Johnson, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and others.

“Charlie Kirk recruited and trained and educated a generation of happy warriors, and we do well to be reminded that the best way to honor his memory and to honor his unmatched legacy is to live as Charlie did,” Johnson said at the vigil on Sunday.

A number of Republicans have called for other official memorials to Kirk in the Capitol, such as Luna calling for a statue of him.
