Love Thy Nader Shines A Light On The Dark Side Of The Modeling Industry

Hulu’s latest reality TV show, Love Thy Nader, gives viewers a rare behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to be a high-profile model living in New York City. The series follows four sisters, largely guided by the eldest sibling, Brooks, as they live together and navigate their careers, tensions with each other, and their complex love lives.

In the later episodes of the season, the show goes from showing the glamorous side of modeling (networking events, fancy beauty treatments, and travel) to revealing some of the darker realities of the industry. Starting in Episode 6, the show takes a deep dive into some of the harmful practices models undertake—specifically taking GLP-1 drugs in order to lose weight.

Brooks Was Open About Using Weight-Loss Drugs

Throughout the season, Brooks makes it clear that her modeling career is her biggest priority in life, superseding things like her dating life. She explains she’ll do whatever it takes to get work—even if it means taking drastic measures. Starting in Episode 6 of the show, we learn that Brooks has been using weight-loss drug injections for nearly two years, relying on them to drop a total of 30 pounds.

Brooks becomes so reliant on the drugs that she ends up losing her appetite completely, appearing faint during some moments, unable to complete her workouts. After she nearly passes out in the bathtub from nausea and fatigue (both side effects of the GLP-1), her sisters stage an intervention with a doctor to tell Brooks she needs to take better care of her health.

Though at first Brooks appears annoyed at her sisters—especially since all three of them have used injections of their own at some point, eventually she agrees that she’ll be more mindful about taking care of her body. In a conversation with Variety, Brooks reflected on the dark chapter of her life that the cameras captured, noting she understood it would upset some viewers:

I needed to grow out of the GLP-1 phase in my life. It took an intervention and being on camera. I’m sure I’ll get backlash from that. It took that for me to say, “OK, just do it the old-fashioned way. Eat healthy and work out.” It was a crutch for me for a year, and it started to get me more jobs in the modeling industry. Designers wanted to dress me more. Fashion houses wanted to put me in the front row. That wasn’t the case before. I saw a change, and I thought it was directly correlated to that.

“I think the industry is shifting — which it should — to more honesty, acceptance and owning who you really are. I hope and pray that it continues on that trajectory,” Brooks said. “[And] I’m not promoting it [GLP-1] at all. I’m trying to promote a little more honesty and being authentic about it,” she added.

As of this article’s writing, it’s unclear whether Brooks and her sisters have stopped using the drugs. She did note that doing so was extremely commonplace within the modeling industry, and that she was simply trying to keep up with the “unrealistic standards” she was expected to meet if she wanted to be hired for jobs.

Brooks Is Adjusting To Her Newfound Fame

Though Brooks was in the public eye before, she noted that her latest stint as a reality TV star took her recognition to an entirely new level. Beyond participating on the last season of Dancing With the Stars (where she had a whirlwind romance with her partner Gleb Savchenko that ended with his infidelity), Love Thy Nader is the first time Brooks has starred in a show of her own.

In the aforementioned conversation, Brooks explained that she was still figuring out how to bring her “raw” self to the screen:

I’m still learning and navigating that, because you can’t have your cake and eat it too. You can’t just be on a reality television show and then say, ‘I’m going to keep everything totally private.’ We did vow when we signed up to be on the show to be real, authentic and show it all.

As of now, a second season of the Nader sisters’ reality show has yet to be confirmed. All episodes of Love Thy Nader are available to stream on Hulu now.

Love Thy Nader is an upcoming reality docuseries premiering this summer on Hulu and Freeform. The series offers an inside look at their glamorous lives, navigating high-profile fashion campaigns, elite social circles, and the dynamics of sisterhood.

Described as a coming-of-age journey, Love Thy Nader delves into themes of ambition, resilience, and family bonds. The Nader sisters, each pursuing their own modeling careers, lean on one another for support and inspiration. Brooks, who has also competed on Dancing with the Stars, serves as a role model for her siblings, encouraging them to dream big and achieve success in the fashion industry. Set against the backdrop of SoHo lofts and Manhattan’s elite social scene, the series explores what it truly means to “make it” in a city where dreams can either flourish or fade.
