A gas station employee shot an off-duty Edgewater police officer multiple times in Ormond-by-the-Sea.

TAMPA, Fla. — A police officer was shot and killed at a Circle K gas station by an employee who reportedly told detectives that he thought about shooting him on his way to work.

Eduardo Felipe Labrada Machado, 24, is being accused of shooting off-duty Officer David Jewell, 45, in the head multiple times around 4 p.m. on Monday at the station in Ormond-by-the-Sea.

Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies said Machado was seen on surveillance video walking out of the store soon after Jewell walked in. Machado was spotted going to his car and getting a jacket before shooting Jewell, according to an initial post by deputies. The gun was later found inside the jacket in the back seat of his car.

“The video is probably something that, in 38 years of law enforcement, I can tell you- it’s unbelievable what you see in that video,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a statement.

Machado told officials that he saw Jewell in the store several times and had an argument with him at some point. He said he had seen Jewell with a gun in the past and was afraid of him.

Deputies said Machado told them he was having a bad day on his drive to work and thought about shooting him earlier. When he saw Jewell at work, Machado used a handgun to shoot him multiple times at close range, a post said.

Jewell had been with the Edgewater Police Department since 2023 and was a former Volusia County Sheriff’s Office telecommunicator, according to officials.

“David was a guy that we could rely on for anything, never heard a bad thing about him, and he’s going to be a tremendous loss to the Edgewater Police Department,” Edgewater Police Chief Charles Geiger said in a media briefing at the scene.

Machado’s family members told law enforcement in interviews that the suspect was diagnosed with a mental health disorder in the past and said he heard voices. Family members described him as quiet and that he played a lot of video games.

Officials said he doesn’t have a criminal history and had one prior encounter with law enforcement for a weapons complaint about him shooting guns at a state park in 2023.

Machado was booked into the county jail without bond on a first-degree murder charge.

The homicide investigation is continuing, and evidence is being processed and analyzed, according to officials.
