Manchester United consider Pochettino as pressure mounts on Amorim

Manchester United are reportedly weighing up alternatives to under-fire manager Ruben Amorim after the club’s dismal start to the 2025-26 season.

Reports in England suggest that USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino is among a five-man shortlist of potential replacements should United decide to make a change in the dugout.

Joining Pochettino on the list of candidates are Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, Fulham’s Marco Silva, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola and former England manager Gareth Southgate.

United are believed to be keeping close tabs on the situation as frustration grows among both the players and supporters.

Amorim, who arrived from Sporting Lisbon in the summer, has overseen United’s worst league start in 33 years, with just one win from his opening four fixtures.

The pressure intensified following a 3-0 defeat to rivals Manchester City, leaving the Portuguese coach fighting for his future.

Dressing room discontent has also been reported, with captain Bruno Fernandes understood to be unhappy at being forced into a deeper midfield role under Amorim’s system.

Amorim stands by his philosophy

Despite mounting criticism, Amorim has remained defiant. He has refused to abandon his 3-4-3 formation, insisting after the City defeat that he would only alter his approach on his own terms.

“It’s not a record you should have at Manchester United,” Amorim admitted. “But I’m not going to change. When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man.”

United face costly decision

One major complication for United is the cost of dismissing their manager. Reports indicate that sacking Amorim within the first year of his contract would trigger a £12 million ($17m) payout, making the decision financially painful for the club.

Even so, the coming weeks could prove decisive. United face Chelsea, Brentford and Sunderland before the next international break, with a daunting trip to Anfield to face Liverpool looming immediately after.
