ST. JOSEPH, Ill. (WCIA) — Law enforcement is investigating after a St. Joseph Middle School teacher allegedly showed an image of themself engaging in a “sexual act” during a class presentation.

Sheriff Dustin Heuerman confirmed that the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which took place at the middle school on the morning of Sept. 11.

Heuerman said that during a classroom presentation, a teacher showed photos from a personal trip, which were related to current events. While sharing the photos, a thumbnail image showing the teacher “allegedly engaged in a sexual act” was accidently shown.

The sheriff’s office said that they are working together with school officials in their investigation. And, at this time, there is no indication that the image was shown on purpose.

WCIA also obtained a message sent to 7th grade families in the district regarding a recent “significant disruption.” WCIA has been unable to confirm with school officials that the events are related to the sheriff’s investigation.

Principal Alisyn Franzen said that recent events caused a “significant disruption” to the school’s learning environment. As new details emerge, Franzen said they will continue to assess the situation.

Following the “significant disruption,” a substitute teacher took over a teacher’s classroom, and a decision about whether that will continue will be made as soon as possible, Franzen said.

“The last few days have proven to be challenging ones for everyone — students, families, and staff. Please remember that our #1 priority is always the safety and well-being of our students. Part of that is the simple fact that students can come to school feeling safe so that they are ready and willing to learn. If students do not feel safe or comfortable, true learning cannot take place” Franzen wrote.

WCIA reached out to the St. Joseph School District for a statement but they said they do not comment on personnel matters.

This is a developing story.
