A 32-year-old Illinois man will spend decades behind bars for repeatedly stabbing his girlfriend”s 9-year-old daughter after he became enraged because she was stomping around the house.

Demetrius Fisher was sentenced to 27 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder, according to the Lake County State Attorney’s Office. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a stabbing on Feb. 15, 2024, at a home in the 3800 block of North Manor Avenue in Beach Park, which is some 50 miles northwest of Chicago.

Cops said the girl’s mother received a phone call from the girl’s school about her not being in attendance. She went home and saw Fisher walking out of the door. When he saw her, Fisher ran away. She went inside to find her daughter suffering from multiple stab wounds. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital for treatment.

Fisher hopped on a bus and was at a train station when cops arrested him.

After receiving her Miranda rights, Fisher said the girl had been stomping around the home which caused him to “snap,” prosecutors told the Lake & McHenry County Scanner. He reportedly said he grabbed a kitchen knife and put on an oven mitt so he wouldn’t suffer injuries while he was stabbing her. He then punched the girl to the ground and stabbed her multiple times.

Fisher reportedly expressed shock that the girl was still alive.

“Did you see her neck?” he reportedly said.

The defendant must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence and then will be on probation for three years following his release. He will also have to register as a violent offender against youth.

“Every child’s life and safety is precious. Our Special Victims Unit, which includes prosecutors, victim advocates, and mental health professionals, have worked tirelessly to secure justice for this victim,” stated Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart. “We are also grateful to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for their emergency response and subsequent investigation. This offender was held accountable and will be out of our community for decades.”
