Montauk Cowboys: The oldest ranch in America is far from the Old West

MONTAUK, New York — Montauk is known for a lot of things like restaurants, boutiques, nightlife, and of course the beach.

Deep Hollow Ranch is something different, all right.

“It’s been called the birthplace of the American cowboy,” said Patrick Keogh, ranch purveyor.

“It’s the oldest ranch in America. We were established in 1658, and today it’s just a wonderful place to come and unplug and ride with your family,” said Cate Keogh, ranch purveyor.

Cate and Patrick are the keepers of this perfect slice of paradise, or as they put it, “We run the ranch.”

They’re underselling.

Deep Hollow Ranch is made up of thousands of acres of sprawling hills and untouched pristine Montauk coastline.

Keeping it afloat is no easy feat.

“You know, my wife and like I said, we met here, we got married here, have a third house. And we’ve had our children, you know, they’ve been raised on the ranch here,” Patrick said. “It’s, you know, it’s a passion.”

A passion worth pursuing.

The ranch offers horse rides for all ages, and pony rides for younger children.

Think of it as a breath of fresh air step away from city life and into nature.

“It rejuvenates you,” Cate said. “I mean, even if you’ve had a bad day or you’re, you know, having a tough time, whatever it is you get on a horse and you ride out there and it just all washes away.”

You can see clear out to the ocean from the trail.

“We just love to meet new people who are interested in everything that we have to offer,” Patrick said. “We do it because we like to see these kids coming out and riding horses. You don’t get that opportunity. And there’s only few and far, you know, few and far between. And you can still do this. And to ride on the beach is just incredible.

And you just to see the kids and just enjoying their lives and getting out here and seeing something we never get to see.”

At Deep Hollow Ranch, it all boils down to a word Patrick mentioned earlier: passion.

The Keoghs love what they do.

It’s a labor of love, and for the people interested, they love sharing.

“Why is it worth all the work to you?” Beckstrom asked.

“Home,” Patrick said. “And the horses.”
