Given the timing — the season phase, the sharp decline in their performance, and the shrinking wild-card contention — Thursday was nearly essential for the Mets to secure a victory, given they began with a four-run lead after their starter’s stint, with just four innings remaining.

Manager Carlos Mendoza utilized his top bullpen lineup: Tyler Rogers, Brooks Raley, Gregory Soto, and Edwin Díaz, who successfully pitched four shutout innings, securing a series win against the Padres.

Ryan Helsley believes there is enough time for him to prove he has broken through and warrants a spot in Mendoza’s circle of trust.

“With just a week to go — possibly three, four, maybe five outings — it’s about regaining my confidence,” Helsley stated prior to the Mets’ Game 154, which marked the start of a series against the Nationals at Citi Field. “I just aim to return to my usual form and contribute to the team’s success.”
