SULLIVAN, Ill. (WCIA) — The former Moultrie County Board member accused of possessing child pornography is facing additional counts following an appearance in court on Friday.

Scott Buxton, 59, was already facing two counts of possessing video depicting child sex abuse following an investigation by the Illinois State Police. On Friday, four new counts were filed against him ahead of a previously scheduled status hearing.

The new counts include three Class 3 felonies of possessing photos or film depicting child pornography. The fourth count is a Class 2 felony, specifically worded to mention that the victim is under the age of 13.

These counts were added onto the Class X and Class 2 felonies Buxton was charged with in June. A member of the Moultrie County Board since 2022 and the Marrowbone Township Supervisor since April, Buxton resigned his positions following his arrest.

Appearing in court for the status hearing on Friday, Buxton waived formal arraignment on the new charges. Another pretrial hearing was scheduled for Nov. 21, and he was remanded to the custody of the Moultrie County Sheriff’s Office to await that hearing in jail.

Jesse Danley, the Coles County State’s Attorney, is overseeing the case as a special prosecutor; Buxton’s status as a former county board member presents a conflict of interest for the Moultrie County State’s Attorney’s Office. WCIA reached out to Danley to learn more about the new counts in the case but has not immediately heard back.
