'At a loss for words': Illinois falls to Indiana in lopsided affair

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WCIA) — Illinois’ Big Ten opener ended in the most lopsided performance of the Bret Bielema era.

No. 9 Illinois traveled to face No. 19 Indiana in a game many said had significant postseason implications, but was not able to find the endzone after the first quarter.

After the Hoosiers took an early lead, Luke Altmyer found Collin Dixon for a 59-yard touchdown. Indiana answered quickly with a touchdown to reclaim the lead, then a blow to the already-thin Illini defensive back room as Miles Scott was ejected for targeting.

David Olano kicked a field goal as time expired in the first half to trail 35-10 heading into the locker room.

The second half saw Indiana continue to dominate offensively while also showing out on defense. Luke Altmyer was sacked seven times, five of which came in the first half.

Indiana defeated Illinois 63-10 in statistically the most lopsided loss of the Bielema era, topping last year’s 38-9 loss at Oregon.

The Illini await their AP Poll fate and prepare to welcome USC to town for Big Noon Kickoff.
