Jets takeaways, report card from NFL Week 3 loss to Buccaneers

The Jets fell 29-27 to the Buccaneers on Sunday. Here are some takeaways from the game:

1. The Jets are in need of more explosive plays within their offensive strategy. Their longest play on Sunday was only 20 yards, while the Buccaneers managed seven plays of 20 yards or greater. This was predictable given the Jets aimed to focus on a run-centric offense. This tactic is effective when leading, but the Jets were trailing on Sunday. They had scoring drives in the fourth quarter that consisted of 10 and 11 plays each. Their lead was achieved thanks to an impressive blocked field goal by the special teams, which effectively acted as an explosive play.

Throughout this season, the Jets aren’t expected to have many opportunities to play from ahead. Therefore, they must figure out how to enhance their passing game to include deeper throws or execute longer running plays.

2. A significant point of discussion heading into this matchup was the absence of three starters on the Buccaneers’ offensive line. Despite this, the Jets secured only one sack and let Baker Mayfield frequently break out of the pocket. Although the Buccaneers committed five holding penalties among their linemen (plus two by receivers), which indicated that the pass rush did add some pressure, it was not as impactful as anticipated given the depletion of the Buccaneers’ line.
