What's next for the Tampa Bay Rays? Fans weigh in after last home game at George M. Steinbrenner Field

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — The Tampa Bay Rays closed out their final home game against the Boston Red Sox at George M. Steinbrenner Field, their temporary home while Tropicana Field undergoes roof repairs from damage caused by Hurricane Milton.

The team’s lease at the Trop runs through the 2028 season, but their future beyond that remains uncertain.

The franchise is in the final stages of a sale expected to be completed within the next two weeks.

Projected owner Patrick Zapulski has said he hopes to keep the team in the Tampa Bay area, with possible sites including Ybor City or near Steinbrenner Field.

Fans across the region are weighing in on where the team should call home.

Brant Colp of Clearwater said he’s glad the team has been able to finish the season despite the stadium repairs.

“It was really cool that, they were able to rent out the facility for them and keep the season going,” Colp said. “That’s the important thing. Everybody’s got to have a place to play.”

Some fans said they’d like to see the Rays return to their current home or move closer to Tampa.

“I don’t really know, but I really hope they do back to the Tropicana,” said Tara Fenlon of Clearwater. “Either there or even closer to here Ybor.”

Jason Gordon of Lutz said the proposed location sites offer some convenience.

“Either one’s fine. Somewhere on the water would be nice though,” Gordon said. “I like it here in Tampa, it’s an easier drive.”

Others pointed to West Shore as an ideal spot.

“I want them on this side, so I don’t care where they end up,” said Regina Toller of Land O’ Lakes. “I think West Shore would be the best, because then it will be able to get everybody from St. Pete on our side. So that’s what we’re looking forward to. We can’t wait for the announcements.”

The Rays have six games left in the regular season.

The Tampa Bay Rays’ 2026 season starts on the road with a nine-game trip, but their home opener will be April 6 against the Chicago Cubs.
