“Three years ago or 30?”
It’s been 30 years since Boys on the Side was released in theaters, and on Monday’s episode of The View, co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Whoopi Goldberg had the opportunity to reflect on this anniversary.
Sitting at the Hot Topics table alongside Goldberg, Ana Navarro, Sunny Hostin, and Alyssa Farah Griffin, McConaughey was reminded by Navarro about the film’s milestone, leading Goldberg and McConaughey to simultaneously remark, “30 years?”
“Where’d that go?” McConaughey added.
Goldberg replied, “I don’t know! It doesn’t seem that long.”
Navarro commented on how Goldberg and McConaughey “still look the same” as they did in the 1995 dramedy. In the film, McConaughey portrayed a cop named Abe Lincoln, while Goldberg played the character Jane DeLuca, with Drew Barrymore and Mary-Louise Parker also part of the cast.
Immediately following a clip from the film, McConaughey asked Goldberg, “Three years ago or 30?”
Goldberg quipped, “Three hundred, three thousand. Who can say?”
As for what they recall from shooting the film, McConaughey told The View, “I remember that was the first role where I actually got a real paycheck.”
He also said he had a place in Saguaro National Forest while they shot in Tucson, and revealed he “had a housekeeper for the first time.”
“She would make my bed and clean up,” he shared.
Hostin chimed in, “That’s when you know you’ve made it.”
McConaughey continued, “She even pressed the little crease in my jeans. I remember telling a friend like, ‘Oh my gosh! I can’t believe it!’ She’s like, ‘Whoa that’s cool… if you like your jeans pressed.’ I’m like, ‘I don’t like my jeans pressed!’ But it was the first time in my life that I had the ability to get ’em pressed, and I remember taking ’em.”
He also made a confession involving none other than Goldberg.
“I also remember I bummed way too many cigarettes off of you,” he admitted. “I should’ve just bought my own pack.”
Fortunately, Goldberg didn’t hold it against McConaughey.
“You know what? That’s what we do as actors,” she said. “What I got, you got. What you got, I got. We just did what we do.”
The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC. Boys on the Side is streaming on Netflix, but the last day to stream it there is Oct. 6.
