SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — It’s Illinois’ Child Passenger Safety Week, and one fire department in Central Illinois is taking action to keep kids safe.
The Savoy Fire Department has car seat safety technicians on staff who will be offering free car seat checks on Saturday.
Tim Worstell, a firefighter and car seat technician at Savoy Fire Department, said that the most common mistake they see is the car seat harness being too loose. Worstell also said that each car seat and vehicle manufacturer has its own rule book, which makes it difficult to know if your seat is safe and up to date.
On Saturday, car seat technicians will check if car seats are expired, if the seats or cars have any recalls, and then, they’ll help install the car seats.
“It’s so important, due to the fact that you want to make sure that your child is safe. Sometimes, you might think it’s in there securely, and that’s why we’re here to help to make sure everything is adjusted properly. A lot goes into it, but more or less, it’s about you know, the safety of the child and we’re here to come out and support it and make sure people come,” Worstell said.
If you are unable to make it on Saturday, the Savoy Fire Department said that you can make an appointment to have your car seats checked.
