() Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested United Nations workers might’ve intentionally stalled an escalator as retribution for President Trump’s criticism of the U.N. and his withholding of funds from the organization.

On Tuesday, just as the first lady Melania and President Trump walked onto an escalator at the United Nations Headquarters, it stalled. Trump mentioned it several times during his speech and afterward with the secretary general.

“If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately,” Leavitt posted on X.

The Times of London reported Sunday that several U.N. workers joked they might stall the escalator when President Trump walked on.

Trump blasted European countries during UN speech

Addressing the U.N. General Assembly, Trump put European countries on blast due to their migration policies.

“Europe is in trouble,” he said. “It’s time to end the failed experiment of open borders. You have to end it now. Your countries are going to hell.”

Trump also accused the U.N. of “funding an assault on Western countries and their borders,” and claimed the U.N. also provided food, shelter, transportation and debit cards to “illegal aliens.”

Trump’s administration also announced plans to create a verification system that would use artificial intelligence to enforce the United Nations’ rules on biological weapons.

The U.N.’s Biological Weapons Convention prohibits the “development, production, acquisition, transfer, stockpiling and use of biological and toxin weapons.”
