Brisbane childcare tries to charge parents thousands for kids' artwork

A Brisbane kindergarten will return portfolios of children’s artwork to parents after a painting stand-off was resolved.

Craigslea Kindergarten director Thomas D’Souza emailed families to ask for $2200 for the end of year portfolios to help pay off the centre’s mounting debt.

Parents were outraged by the request and asked the centre to return the artworks for free.

“That email essentially said the committee had passed a resolution to try and fundraise by selling the children’s artwork,” she told 9News earlier this week.

“It’s ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.

“I don’t even really have words for it.

“We signed consent forms at the start of the year that say the portfolios belong to us and that parents have a right to handle their kid’s sensitive information including photos.”

The move has prompted C&K, the company affiliated with Craigslea Kindergarten, to step in and recover the portfolios.

In a statement to 9News today, a spokesperson confirmed the “documents are now available for families to collect free of charge”.

In addition to this, the spokesperson said C&K would work closely with all relevant departments to ensure the kindergarten re-opens its doors for term four, after it closed down almost three weeks ago.
