A teaching assistant in South Carolina was arrested after he allegedly released a fart spray several times in his classroom at West Florence High School.

Alexander Lewis has been accused of using the stink spray multiple times in his classroom in Florence, South Carolina, between August 25 and September 19. According to a news release shared by the Florence County Sheriff’s Office (FSCO), the spray created “a foul odor” and that caused “respiratory issues.”

“Investigators have arrested a Florence man alleged to have been responsible for creating a foul odor at a Florence High School,” FCSO stated in the news release. “Lewis is alleged to have sprayed an internet-acquired spray designed to imitate fecal odor at the school on multiple occasions and over time, resulting in a disruption of the school.”

Several children “required medical attention for respiratory issues,” according to authorities. Additionally, the school had to pay $55,000 in inspection and damage fees for their air conditioning system in the aftermath of the incident.

Lewis, 32, was arrested on September 20 and he’s facing charges of disturbing schools and malicious injury to property with a value of over $10,000, per the release. The investigation is ongoing and there’s a possibility he will be faced with more charges.

The prank was first noticed when students reported smelling “a strong gas-like odor throughout the school” that left them feeling nauseous, dizzy and suffering from headaches, according to ABC 15 News. Several parents also reported that their kids stayed home from school due to the effects of the spray.

“My son says it’s been about three days now and it’s causing him to have headaches,” one parent told the outlet. “It’s concerning, especially when it’s affecting my child’s health.”

Meanwhile, a student also opened up about the experience while talking to ABC 15 News. “Every time I go to my second block class, I walk up the stairwell and immediately, teachers are covering their noses and their mouths, coughing because of the smell,” they said. “I got physically sick the other day because of the smell. I feel like I’m going to pass out because I get so lightheaded and so dizzy.”

Following his arrest, Lewis is being held at Florence County Detention Center. He received a bond for each of his charges, per ABC 15 News.

The first bond is $8,000 for the malicious injury to personal property charge, which will be returnable to the general sessions court on November 19. The second bond is set at $1,090 for interfering with schools, which will be returnable to Florence magistrates’ court on October 15.
