An airline is set to take flights to another level with the launch of what could be the world’s longest direct journey.

China Eastern Airlines is introducing a new route that stretches from Pudong International in China and Ministro Pistarini International in Argentina, taking 25.5 hours.

The return journey could take a staggering 29 hours, CNN reports, and has been dubbed as one of the longest in the world.

The route will begin at the end of this year, from December 4, and will see flights MU745 and MU746 cover 12,500 miles.

Passengers will have the choice of two flights a week.

However, though the journeys are ‘direct’, they do include a two-hour stop in Auckland, New Zealand.

The flights jet over remote waters that aren’t usually covered, and come close to Antarctica, all to help save time.

China Eastern Airlines has reportedly described the flight as ‘the world’s first commercial route connecting antipodal cities’.

‘The Shanghai Pudong-Auckland-Buenos Aires route is seen as an important measure to build a new “Air Silk Road” channel between Asia-Pacific and South America,’ the airline added.

Before the new route, those wanting to travel between China and Argentina typically had to journey for more than 30 hours.

The trip would usually involve connecting flights and layovers.

Ticket prices for new route are between £1,130 to £1,670 ($1,525 to $2,254) for economy.

Business class is priced at around £3,700 ($4,994).

On SkyScanner, the quickest flight from Shanghai Airport to Buenos Aires is 29 hours long and involves a one hour and 25 minute connection in Amsterdam. It costs £2,050, for the journey on September 30.

Meanwhile, the cheapest is priced at £922 but is 54 hours and 43 minutes long, with three connections.

Previously, Qantas announced a new ultra-long-haul route is set to launch in 2027 and will take around 20 hours.

Meanwhile, at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) conference back in June, Qantas provided insight to what passengers could expect on board.

It said that economy passengers on the lengthy flight would have the airline’s biggest legroom yet.

The airline’s Airbus A350 planes will have 84cm of legroom in economy as well as two USB-C ports for fast-charging, reports The Times.

Travellers will also have a 33cm TV screen, foot-net and storage space to keep glasses and personal items in.
