Adelita Grijalva Biography – Adelita Grijalva Wiki

Adelita Grijalva is an American politician and member-elect of the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona’s 7th district. She is the daughter of Raul Grijalva, who died in March 2025 after a battle with lung cancer. The younger Grijalva secured the congressional seat left vacant by her father’s death.

Grijalva defeated business owner and contractor Daniel Butierez, the Republican nominee, in a special election held on Sep. 23, 2025, in southern Arizona’s 7th Congressional District. She will serve the remaining 15 months of the term of Raul Grijalva.

Grijalva was first elected to public office in 2002, when she was elected to the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) Governing Board, the largest school-district in Tucson and the second-largest district in Arizona.

Most recently, Grijalva served on the Pima County Board of Supervisors, representing District 5. She was first elected to the Pima County Board of Supervisors in 2020, becoming the first Latina, and only the second woman, to serve as Chair. She was re-elected by the voters in 2024, earning more than 73% of the vote.

Prior to being elected to the Pima County Board of Supervisors, Grijalva worked at Pima County Teen Court for more than 25 years, where she helped court-involved youth and their families through a restorative juvenile diversion program.

She is the daughter of Raul Grijalva, who died on March 13, 2025, at the age of 77 following complications from lung cancer treatment. The Arizona Democrat was born to a Mexican immigrant farmworker in Arizona before his spectacular rise to Congress. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2002 and had spent over four decades in public service.

“Rep. Grijalva fought a long and brave battle,” his office said in a statement. “More than two decades ago, Rep. Grijalva embarked on a journey to be a voice for Southern Arizonans in Washington, D.C. Driven by his community values and spirit, he worked tirelessly and accomplished so much — for Arizona and for the country.”

“Rep. Grijalva’s kind and humble nature was known to many,” the statement from his office said. “He was approachable by all because he believed people should be treated as equals. He loved to give gifts, blare music in his office, and get to know people for who they are.”
