James Cameron will soon return with a new, enthralling installment to the Avatar series. But will that be the last we see of the Na’vi?

Avatar: Fire and Ash, premiering in theaters later this year, will introduce a new foe and a dramatic new saga for Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family. Varang, played by Oona Chaplin, is the leader of the Mangkwan Ash Clan, described as “an aggressive Na’vi tribe,” as they also face a new threat from Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang).

The official logline for Avatar: Fire and Ash teases, “Jake and Neytiri’s family grapples with grief after Neteyam’s death, encountering a new, aggressive Na’vi tribe, the Ash People, who are led by the fiery Varang, as the conflict on Pandora escalates and a new moral focus emerges.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash will serve as a sequel to 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which premiered almost 13 years after Cameron graced theaters with the epic debut Avatar in 2009.

But will Avatar: Fire and Ash be the final installment of the franchise? How many Avatar movies are there? Here is everything we know about what Cameron has planned for the Avatar franchise.

How many Avatar movies are there?

The Avatar franchise currently comprises three movies: Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash. But Cameron actually has two additional Avatar movies planned after Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Speaking to Empire, Cameron insisted that he is still committed to completing two more films for the franchise, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. “I mean, there’s no reason not to. I’m healthy, I’m good to go,” he said.

Cameron has already reportedly began shooting Avatar 4 after completing production on Avatar: Fire and Ash, so fans may not have to wait an additional 13 years for the next installment.

How to stream the Avatar movies:

Both Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water can be streamed on Disney+.

Disney+ offers a number of subscription options, so you can find the one that works for you. With ads, a subscription costs $9.99/month; without ads, it’s $15.99/month or $159.99/year.

There are also Disney+ bundles with Hulu, Max, and ESPN+, so you can subscribe to up to three services at once and save over 40% every month. The bundles are available in a few different configurations, starting at $10.99/month for Disney+ and Hulu with ads, and going up to $29.99/month for Disney+, Hulu, and Max ad-free.

Avatar: The Way of Water began streaming just months after it premiered in theaters.

Since Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to premiere in theaters Dec. 19, fans should expect to be able to stream it at home in 2026.
