Harris blasts Comey indictment: 'It's painful to see'

Former Vice President Kamala Harris bashed the federal government’s indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, calling it “painful to see” on Friday.

“It’s frustrating, but more than that, it’s painful to see,” Harris told CNN. “It’s painful to see. I mean what’s happening with Comey: Are you f‑‑‑ing kidding me? The United States Department of Justice?”

The Justice Department indicted Comey late Thursday on federal charges of obstruction and perjury for comments he made in a 2020 Senate hearing about President Trump’s 2016 campaign’s alleged ties with Russia.

The president previously called accusations of the campaign’s ties to the foreign nation a “witch hunt” and a “hoax.” He fired Comey in 2017 during the FBI’s investigation.

Trump has long called for charges to be brought against Comey, even publicly directing Attorney General Pam Bondi to pursue charges against him and other political opponents last weekend.

“We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “They impeached me twice, and indicted me (5 times!), OVER NOTHING. JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!”

Harris, a former prosecutor and California attorney general, warned during her 2024 presidential campaign that Trump’s second term would be dangerous for the U.S. and that he would go after political opponents.

She criticized his talk of an “enemy within,” which she said he considered to be “anyone that doesn’t support him.”

“We know who he would target, because he has attacked them before: Journalists whose stories who he doesn’t like, election officials who refuse to cheat by finding extra votes for him, judges who insist on following the law instead of bending to his will,” Harris said on the campaign trail.

On Friday, Harris doubled down on these concerns.

“We knew he would do it,” she told CNN. “But it is every day unrelenting.”

Comey’s indictment has sparked concern among other Democrats and legal experts, who believe that it will set a precedent for the Trump administration’s prosecution of other adversaries.

“The Department of Justice has become a political tool of a vengeful president,” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Friday.
