TMZ sifts through surveillance video of Celeste Rivas Hernandez

() Celebrity news website TMZ has obtained surveillance video believed to show Celeste Rivas Hernandez walking hurriedly in her hometown of Lake Elsinore, Calif., early March 19, 2024 around the period when the teen was known to be running away.

TMZ executive producer Charles Latibeaudiere said the footage comes from a local liquor store whose owner has said Celeste, off camera, was observed getting into a waiting vehicle. Celeste’s sister reportedly has identified the faraway girl in the video as her sibling. In the footage, the teen wears a black hoodie and white pants.

Celeste’s decomposed remains were found earlier this month in an impounded Tesla owned by singer D4vd. The 20-year-old recording artist is cooperating with Los Angeles police, his representatives say, and authorities have searched the Hollywood Hills rental property where he had been staying.

Latibeaudiere told “Banfield” on Friday the case has been unusually quiet.

“You usually hear something. The police forces are too large to not hear something, and there’s a clear order from someone to make sure we keep a tight lid on whatever they’ve learned at this point,” he said.

D4vd’s Tesla could hold answers

The Tesla model in which Celeste’s remains were found is loaded with sensors and cameras and could yield a trove of information about the case, depending on how the vehicle had been configured, says Jason Lewis, a digital forensic expert.

“If ‘Sentry Mode’ was actually activated on the vehicle, then it’s doing a lot of recording of video footage from its eight external cameras,” Lewis said, referring to the security system for parked and locked Teslas. “You’d actually have clips of the people actually opening the door, a clip of someone opening the trunk, and that could possibly be recovered by the police.”

If Sentry Mode was not activated, he added, there would not be footage recorded by the stationary vehicle. Another thing to consider, Lewis said, is that videos can be deleted remotely, though police would still have a chance at recovering the information.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Department says the teen’s cause of death has not yet been determined.
