SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Scattered storms are expected this weekend, and we continue to track the latest in the tropics.

Locally, a frontal boundary coupled with abundant tropical moisture will continue to keep rain and storms in play through Sunday. This remains independent of any tropical activity. Some areas may see localized flooding from heavy rainfall.

Tropical Depression Nine holds steady as the system begins to slowly move away from Cuba. As of 5 PM, maximum sustained winds are 35 mph, with higher gusts. The forecast cone from the National Hurricane Center continues a partly encouraging trend, with the system anticipated to make a right-hand turn.

However, exact track and intensity details are more uncertain than usual due to a complicated forecast setup. The slower movement of TD-9 along with Hurricane Humberto’s strength will influence the steering of future-Imelda, which will help pull the system away from our area.

The exact severity of impacts, including wind, rainfall totals, storm surge, and tornadoes for the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry will be based on the track of what eventually will be Imelda. These details will become clearer over the next 24-36 hours.

Continue to keep tuned to the forecast as we get more details.

In other tropical news, Humberto became a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph. This storm will not impact the US, but it being stronger than anticipated will allow for it to influence future-Imelda’s track due to it tracking north a tad quicker and having a greater reach across the Western Atlantic Ocean.
