Comey after indictment urges supporters to vote: ‘It's the one awesome power in a Democracy, if we all use it’

Former FBI Director James Comey urged his supporters to vote in a Substack video post on Sunday, comments that came a days after a federal grand jury indicted him.

“It’s the one awesome power in a democracy, if we all use it,” Comey said of voting in his Substack post. “I keep reading polls saying vast majorities of Americans oppose moves by the Trump administration, or disapprove of this president or this Congress. Great, so do I.”

“But if you don’t vote and get all your neighbors, friends and relatives to vote, the people who make up that disapproving giant mass of American citizens, nothing changes,” he added.

On Thursday, a federal grand jury indicted Comey, backing charges for a top adversary of the Trump administration, only days after President Trump pushed for the former FBI director’s prosecution.

Comey was hit with two federal charges, stemming from testimony Comey gave before the Senate five years ago while it was looking into investigations into links between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia.

Justice Department officials have painted the indictment as a step toward accountability, while Comey on Thursday said his “heart is broken” for the department and that he is innocent.

On Sunday, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said that there are “many things” for which Comey could have faced charges. However, he also said the statute of limitations had expired when it came to those other allegations.

“It’s a very important principle for us to apply that everybody has to subscribe to the law, even a former FBI director, and he has lots to answer for,” Johnson said on CNN Sunday.

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment.
