GBI investigating two deaths in Screven County

SCREVEN COUNTY, Ga. () – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating two deaths in Screven County, after the Screven County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the agency.

According to the agency, law enforcement responded to a call regarding a car accident on Highway 301 South, a few miles outside the Sylvania City limits on Saturday, Sept. 27 at approximately 3:15 a.m.

When officers arrived, Leon Tolbert Jr., 30, of Sylvania, Ga. and Brandon Counts, 30, also of Sylvania, Ga. were found inside the car, each suffering from one gunshot wound. Tolbert, Jr. was pronounced dead on the scene. Counts was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, but died a short time later. 

Georgia State Patrol responded to the scene and determined the car was not involved in a crash, but had driven off the side of the road. A handgun was recovered from within the car, according to the GBI.

The bodies of Tolbert, Jr and Counts will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler, Georgia for autopsies.
